If you’ve seen the trailer for The Wilds but haven’t binge-watched the first season yet, you may assume the show couldn’t possibly yield fashion inspiration. After all, it follows a group of teenage girls who get stranded on a deserted island for weeks while en route to what they believed was a women’s empowerment retreat, forcing them to fight for their lives as part of an elaborate social experiment. And yet, despite the survivalist theme, Fatin Jadmani manages to stand out as the undisputed style star, rocking a multitude of chic outfits while enduring sleepless nights, unexpected storms, and a bout of food poisoning, among other dismal circumstances.

Portrayed by actress Sophia Ali, Fatin doesn’t wear comfortable athleisure like many of the other characters on the Amazon Prime Video series; she wears sparkly pants, crop tops, skinny jeans, fuzzy slippers, and a steady rotation of jackets covered in fur, … Read the rest

When shopping, do you ever come across or try on an item that you suspect may look cheap but can’t quite put your finger on why? Well, today I’m here to help you not only decode why an item may look less than worthy of its price tag but also avoid accidentally purchasing such pieces only to later regret it. Seeing as I’ve been a recreational or professional shopper pretty much all my life, I’ve come to learn certain tricks to figuring out which items to skip and what to look for in a budget buy.

Some are more obvious such as cheap-looking hardware or zippers, but others, such as oddly placed seams and unfinished hems, can take a bit of practice to spot. To see my full list, read about all seven of the characteristics to look out for, and do a little editor-approved shopping along the … Read the rest

Slouchy, lug-sole, combat and Western-inspired boots are all staples in our footwear rotation, but styling them through the elements can be tricky. While winter layering offers lots of styling opportunity, watching your favourite pants trail though slush can make you want to avoid going outside altogether. Luckily, the latest street style trend will help eliminate any soggy hemlines: The most fashion-forward street style stars are wearing their pants tucked into boots.

From coordinated leather pants and boots for a seamless look to an oversized pant, which gives a billowy effect, there’s no wrong way to work this trend. For maximum comfort, gather and fold a wide pant leg flat around the ankle so it slips into a boot easily and doesn’t bulge or rub against you when walking.  Treat and clean your leather and suede boots on the regular and tuck pants in to help minimize your dry cleaning … Read the rest

Fashion dictates what clothing and accessories that a lot of women buy and wear. And I concluded the whole exercise by writing this updated article below. In keeping with the spirit of upgrading and uplifting our African milieu and , I have decided to Post this updated version with a unique take about the Africans and their Cultures, music and traditional clothing worn by Africans to in performing their culture, dances and the African languages they sing in. I hope this strikes a certain cord with many Africans and other people, and maybe that that will help inform and empower them about themselves and their cultures, too. Politics is important, but without culture it is barren, fake and a fiction. We have seen, as we grew up what role culture has played in some of our lives. Although we are aghast with the present behaviors of our children, and the … Read the rest

Let’s face it: 2020 has been a year of letdowns, and the fashion industry is no exception – especially when it comes to matters of race. As a Black editor, I’m sick and tired of the general refusal to follow through on promises and simply do what is right. Following George Floyd’s murder, countless brands rushed to social media to share sentiments of solidarity. My inbox was flooded with emails titled, “Our commitment,” “We stand with the Black community,” and, my personal favorite, “We pledge to do better.” As someone who’s worked in fashion for eight years and experienced discrimination both firsthand and from afar, these so-called “promises” fell on deaf ears. They were performative, lacked emotion, and, frankly, felt like they were after one thing: my coin. As I dealt with the trauma and grief of losing … Read the rest

It’s been over a year since Katie Holmes stepped out in her now-iconic Khaite cashmere bra and matching cardigan set. A photograph depicting the actress hailing a cab as her cardigan and strap fell from her shoulder subsequently went viral and put the underwear as outerwear trend back on the fashion map. Fast-forward to 2021 and the look’s influence remains palpable—particularly on the designer circuit

Moda Operandi has reported a 30% increase in the popularity of bras for SS21 and found they were featured in 10% of all trunk shows (new collection previews and pre-sales), compared to 3% in the previous season. Essentially, it’s a look that’s only gaining momentum, and although it might not be considered a “mainstream” trend, it’s certainly one that’s providing hard to ignore, on both the high-end and high street shopping circuits.

The big question is, how does one style a bra top? “The … Read the rest

Where are you going? To take a walk around the block? To the grocery store? To work, because you provide an essential service? (Thank you!) With few other exceptions – some outdoor skating rinks and ski hills are open in some Canadian cities, for example – that is an exhaustive list of the winter activities possible during pandemic lockdowns.
