When Alessandro Michele announced he’d be trailing away from the traditional fashion calendar to show Gucci in bi-annual seasonless collections, he was doing what few had already done. Little did we know, the Italian fashion maestro was winding up for more with his Gucci Aria collection.

The collection released this morning as a film includes the results of what Michele calls a “hacking lab” — the target being another luxury force in the stable of Kering brands: Balenciaga. The term “hacking” makes it clear this was not a collaboration, where both parties provide consent. This was a bold incursion into the world presided over by another designer: Demna Gvasalia.

Named Aria — which is defined as a solo performance in an opera — the collection was more of a dance with soft and hard in perfect harmony. Or perhaps Michele was suggesting that he would create an aria, by blending … Read the rest

Brooklyn-based power couple Nick Haramis, a Canadian whose current gig is editor-in-chief of Interview Magazine, and Misha Kahn, a multimedia artist who hails from Minnesota, have received much media attention for their eccentrically decorated apartment. Yet their decadent wardrobe choices also beg for a space in the spotlight thanks to an eclectic closet teeming with pleasingly tactile pieces and scads of items by designer Thom Browne.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ARKAN ZAKHAROV. “The more familiar I became with Thom’s work, the more I imagined an idealized version of myself in the clothes,” says Haramis.

Netflix’s new true-crime series The Serpent takes us on a journey of glamour, seduction, and murder. It follows the story of ’70s French serial killer Charles Sobhraj (played by Tahar Rahim) who goes by the name “Alain” and his menacing partner-in-crime girlfriend Marie-Andrée Leclerc (played by Jenna Coleman) who goes by “Monique.” While the pair prey on Western tourists traveling in Southeast Asia, Monique uses her charm and fashion sense to lure in unsuspecting victims – and although we absolutely condemn her predatory behavior, we know exactly how to copy her sultry French-bohemian style.

In the 1970s, the ideal fashion look included flared, high-waisted blue jeans or trousers secured with a wide belt. Oversize sunglasses were also very popular, as well as bright psychedelic prints. As depicted in The Serpent, some of Monique’s signature pieces are hair scarves, aviator or large square-framed sunglasses, and gold drop-hoop earrings. She’s most … Read the rest

Toward the end of Rihanna’s most recent fashion show for her Savage x Fenty lingerie brand, Paris Hilton appeared in a hot-pink bodysuit with generous cut-outs and mesh leggings, her blond hair framing the sunglasses on her face. The camera then panned to Margie Plus. The size-18 body-positivity activist and Savage x Fenty brand ambassador was wearing a nearly identical outfit with her neon-yellow hair pulled back into two thick braids. Two women, two signature looks. This shouldn’t have been remarkable to see, but for Plus, it has been a journey.

“I feel the most myself when I have neon hair — it’s like my own art,” says Plus, whose real name is Margie Ashcroft, of the vibrant-yellow hair she has sported since 2016. Growing up in the small city of Spokane, Wash., she liked to stand out. It prepared her for an editorial internship at Condé Nast at a … Read the rest

Update: The Met Gala is officially returning this year! On Monday, Vogue announced the Costume Institute’s plans for not one but two major exhibitions, along with a “slightly smaller celebration” pending government guidelines later this year on Sept. 13, timed to the closing of New York Fashion Week. The magazine also confirmed the event will return to its regular scheduling in 2022 and continue to host the party on the first Monday in May next year.

While a theme has not yet been announced for the 2021 Met Gala, the details surrounding the two-part exhibition may offer some clues. The first part of the exhibition, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” will open on Sept. 18, while the second, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” will show starting May 5, 2022.

“I think that the emphasis on conscious creativity was really consolidated during the pandemic and the social justice movements,” … Read the rest

Asian American fashion designer and activist Prabal Gurung was born in Singapore, grew up in Nepal, and lived in India before starting his New York-based namesake brand 12 years ago “to show marginalized people that they are seen, and that they matter.” He is one of the influencers, editors, and designers using his platform to address the anti-Asian hate crimes in America, among others such as Phillip Lim, Public School’s Dao-Yi Chow, and Allure Editor in Chief Michelle Lee.

“I was advised to limit the diversity of my runways because clients wouldn’t be as receptive to non White models.”

While he’s speaking up now, most recently penning an op-ed for CNN about the discrimination he’s faced in the fashion industry, urging the rest of his peers to stand for change and inclusivity of all minorities, it’s not the first time Gurung has stressed the … Read the rest

The amount of time I’ve spent online shopping in lockdown might indicate that I am someone with money to spare, which I can absolutely assure you I am not. Yet I have somehow managed to amass a melange of items – a paltry substitute for all of the people I did not see and all of the places I did not go over the course of the past year. Fortunately, I have an emergency budget for exactly these type of purchases – you know, the ones made during a global pandemic – and have considered them to be a part of my 2020 healing process. With the hours I’ve logged on retail sites, in addition to the targeted Instagram posts I’ve traversed, I’ve come to find many new brands to help nurse my quarantine habit and inspire my “When We Are Back Outside” aesthetic. One of the main sources of … Read the rest
