A summer trend you’ll likely be sporting but may not have expected? Body chains. That’s right: not only are there tons of sleek, chic, sometimes bejeweled body chains hitting shelves ahead of Shot Girl Summer, but the hashtag #bellychain has millions of views on TikTok.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the body-chain (or if you don’t recall wearing one in the 2000s), the accessory has a storied history. In fact, its origins can be traced back to Indian belly dancers. (For this reason, you may also see them referred to as belly chains.) According to Shaya business head Mimi Hrahsel, who lives in Mumbai, body chains are often found in Indian temple art and worn as part of bridal traditions. “Nowadays, the accessory has shifted from being worn only for traditional occasions to becoming high fashion,” she told POPSUGAR. “There are fresher takes and varied styles, from minimal designs to … Read the rest

Netflix released its latest teaser for Stranger Things season 4 on May 6, and it looks like we’re going to learn even more about Eleven’s backstory.

The clip takes place at Hawkins Laboratory, presumably when Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) was there as a child. Inside, children in identical hospital gowns are playing together, as eerie music and echoed laughter ripples in the background. Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine) — who was believed to have been killed in season 1 — enters the room. He announces to the children that he has something “very special planned” for them. We hear someone breathing heavily and the shot pans to a door labelled 11, followed by Hawkins saying, “Eleven, are you listening?” She opens her eyes, and the screen goes black.

*Shudder*

Here’s what we know about our sci-fi fave’s upcoming season — caution, spoilers ahead.

When Ashlyn So puts her mind to something, there’s no stopping her. Merely three years after attending her first sewing class at age 6, the fashion designer made her New York Fashion Week debut, presenting an enchanted forest-themed collection among designers five times her senior. And that’s just one of many accomplishments on her already-extensive résumé. Nowadays, 13-year-old Ashlyn is using her platform to speak out against the rise in hate crimes targeting Asian Americans, proving she’s ready to express herself with more than just a needle and thread. In honor of APIA Heritage Month, POPSUGAR caught up with Ashlyn about her fashion design endeavors and activism efforts, and the conversation instantly solidified our prior decision to include the talented San Francisco native on our 21 Under 21 list.

Ashlyn’s obsession with sewing dates all the way back to preschool. While her classmates played with blocks … Read the rest

Billie Eilish is an icon of her own making. Despite reaching mega-stardom at a young age, she has always been in control of her own image and sound. Unlike most stars, Eilish did not become famous thanks to an engineered persona and breakout hit. Instead, she was catapulted into the spotlight almost accidentally when she wrote the song Ocean Eyes at 13 years old with the help of her brother, FINNEAS, after her dance instructor asked her to write a song to perform to. She uploaded it onto the music streaming site SoundCloud and it quickly went viral. Since then, she has worked closely with her brother on almost all of her music, resulting in an organic sound that is uniquely hers.

2021 has been a transformative year for the 19-year-old artist. From her new bombshell blonde hair, to her lingerie shoot with British Vogue, to being chosen as … Read the rest

Freeform’s latest psychological thriller Cruel Summer, produced by Jessica Biel, was filmed in Dallas, TX and takes place over the course of three consecutive years in the ’90s. Starring Olivia Holt (Kate Wallis), Chiara Aurelia (Jeanette Turner), Harley Quinn Smith (Mallory Higgins), and Allius Barnes (Vince Fuller), the cast is stacked with talent and all of the actors share a deep understanding of who their characters are. They worked with costume designer Taneia Lednicky (who also assisted on Friday Night Lights, while we’re talking high school storylines), to convey their personal evolutions from 1993 to 1995. The way these four kids process these trying, tumultuous years becomes so obvious through what they’re choosing to wear – and the objects they leave to collect dust.

We talked to Taneia, along with all four stars of the show, about collaborating during fittings and discovering designer pieces that fit right in … Read the rest

As director of operations at Paris Jewellers, Chau Lui — who co-owns the Edmonton-based company along with her sister, Trang — has quite a legacy to maintain. The duo’s parents, who moved with their young children from Vietnam to Canada, founded the business after training as goldsmiths once they had arrived in their new home country. Honouring this endeavour, as well as their ancestry, has motivated the sisters to launch The Asian Heritage Hope collection, a new set comprised of stud earrings and a pendant necklace that both boast a rose quartz detail. In an effort to address and quell a surge in anti-Asian racism in the past year, 100 percent of net proceeds from sales of the set will go to the Canada-based Asian Solidarity Fund and Stop AAPI Hate, an American non-profit.

“I saw so much hard work growing up,” Lui says of what inspired the collection and … Read the rest

Multi-talented journalist, brand founder and author David Yi is a beauty industry powerhouse. With over a decade of experience under his belt in the New York media space (where he’s written for publications like WWD and Mashable), Yi launched his own inclusive beauty site, Very Good Light, in 2016. His latest ventures include a new genderless skincare brand called Good Light and an upcoming book called Pretty Boys (to be released June 22).

Kicking off our series of brand founder interviews for Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, we caught up with Yi to chat all things beauty, including why he’s launched not one but two inclusive beauty brands, and how consumers can appreciate Korean beauty without fetishizing cultural practices and rituals.

How did you make the transition from journalism to product development?

If you’re familiar with Janelle Monáe’s style, then you probably know she tends to keep to a wardrobe of black and white on the red carpet. Monáe told HuffPost the color palette speaks to her background and history: “It’s a dedication to uniformity and I’m a minimalist by heart, but a lot of it had to do with me wanting to have a uniform like the working class, like my mom and my grandmother,” she explained. While we have seen the singer, songwriter, producer, and actress in color before, she mostly stays firmly dedicated to this look.

Her stylist Alexandra Mandelkorn, whom she’s worked with for over four years, told POPSUGAR that this fashion choice extends beyond events – like for her recent trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where Janelle wore black-and-white outfits with a vacation vibe. “Fun prints, embroidery, and sheer fabrics are all fab in black and … Read the rest

On the morning of Saturday, May 1, Suzanne Rogers posted an Instagram Story posing with former U.S. President Donald Trump at his private club, Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach, Fla. Given that Rogers has positioned herself as the fairy godmother of Canadian fashion, members of that community reacted immediately with condemnations, citing Trump’s lack of support for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ people. In 2016, a $1 million donation from The Suzanne and Edward Rogers Foundation established the Suzanne Rogers Fashion Institute at Ryerson University to support emerging designers. Last November, the Foundation provided another gift of $1 million to the SRFI. But Rogers’ post seems to have trumped, so to speak, her previous financial goodwill.

Here is what we know so far:
