It’s impossible to talk about Bollywood screen style without talking about designer Manish Malhotra. After all, he’s in charge of most of the iconic outfits we all still dream about today. I spoke with the designer to learn more about how he paved his way into films, designing, and, of course, some of his most talked-about creations seen on the silver screen.

While the designer has always been interested in movies, he realized what he wanted to do in life while he was modeling during his college years. “I got my first break in 1989 when Juhi Chawla was starring in the David Dhawan film Swarg where I created two costumes for Juhi for one song sequence. But the movie Rangeela was my turning point,” Manish told me. “That was in 1995. The director, Ram Gopal Verma, was clear with his brief, and actress Urmila Matondkar was also all set … Read the rest

It’s exciting when a movement as powerful as sustainable fashion bypasses the buzzword phase and proves its staying power. How the effort is executed, however, varies widely from consumer to brand, whether you’re thrifting at a consignment shop or choosing biodegradable packaging for all your shipping needs. When it comes to denim, in an effort to conserve clean drinking water and keep the planet free of pollution, companies implementing water conservation efforts are blazing the trail for the apparel industry writ large.

Eco-minded brands use water-saving wash techniques at various points in the denim-making process to reduce water usage. For the uninitiated, cotton irrigation makes up 92 percent of the water footprint of a pair of jeans. According to The 71 Percent, it takes a whopping 1,800 gallons of water to grow enough cotton for your blues – that’s a mind-blowing figure for just one garment. While seemingly minor details … Read the rest

Lovecraft Country star Jamie Chung – who is nominated for a SAG Award tonight – made a powerful statement that transcended the fashion sphere during the 2021 SAG Awards. Jamie wore a firetruck-red, off-the-shoulder Oscar de la Renta gown with ruffled sleeves, which she paired with matching Stuart Weitzman heels and a custom Edie Parker clutch engraved with gold lettering that spelled out “Stop Asian Hate.” “In some Asian cultures, the color red symbolizes joy, luck and happiness,” Jamie captioned a post on Instagram on Sunday. “In Korean culture it symbolizes creation, passion and power. I’m so proud of my history and heritage.”

Following the fatal Atlanta spa shootings on March 16, Jamie sat down with POPSUGAR to deliver an inspiring message about the recent rise in anti-Asian hate crimes. “I think what’s most important, especially with our community, is speaking up about it,” she said. “We’re so conditioned to … Read the rest

A post shared by A S H L E Y G R A H A M (@ashleygraham)

I still remember walking into Abercrombie & Fitch, the store drenched in Fierce cologne you could smell from the mall entrance without trying. I was probably wearing a fringe-hem denim skirt just like Ashley Graham’s, in search of another one in a slightly darker wash to go with my lighter Le Tigre polo. Even then, I knew about tonal contrasting. Graham was clearly a fan of the same look. The 33-year-old supermodel, who is slowly picking up fashion gigs after spending time with husband Justin Ervin and their new son, Isaac, has been providing us with some damn good social media content lately.

After cracking us up by doing very mundane tasks around the house in luxury clothes and heels, Ashley shared two nostalgic throwbacks we can’t stop … Read the rest

A day in the life of a TikTok star in the fashion sphere isn’t all camera flashes and perfect poses. After over a year of working with TikTokers behind the scenes, stylist Tabitha Sanchez sat down with POPSUGAR to discuss the ins and outs of curating eye-catching looks for influencers and what it was like to style the platform’s Labyrinth Runway Finale. The event, hosted by Frankie Jonas on March 18, capped off TikTok Fashion Month with a virtual runway show designed to promote diversity, body positivity, and inclusivity in the fashion industry. Oh, and did we mention the looks in the show are shoppable?

“Because I work in fashion, I know that it’s not the most accessible or most inclusive space for many reasons. But this changes that a little bit,” Tabitha said. “I think that TikTok is changing the way we consume entertainment, especially in the past year … Read the rest

Barbie Ferreira was one of the first celebrities to get her hands on H&M’s regal Simone Rocha collaboration, so we’re not at all surprised the brand tapped the Euphoria star to model its latest sustainable collection from a project called Innovation Stories. Barbie worked with her stylist of two years, Chris Horan (who was introduced through a mutual client and Barbie’s friend Rowan Blanchard), to select her favorites from the line and curate an outfit that represents her edgy taste. We talked to Horan about their exciting collaboration process.

“It’s nice to be able to incorporate these pieces into a look that is widely accessible and that people can re-create.”

“She has great ideas, and what she likes is always evolving – and that makes every project fun. We usually go through collections and send each other images back and forth. Sometimes, Barbie already has a makeup and hair vibe, … Read the rest

Amanda Gorman, activist, inaugural poet, and writer, is developing a signature color palette alongside her stylist Jason Bolden. It happens to be connected to the yellow Prada coat we saw her in when she first took the stage on Inauguration Day to read “The Hill We Climb,” which is now a book!

Gorman sat for a virtual interview on Good Morning America to celebrate her recent success and her new Penguin Random House publication, speaking as eloquently as ever to Robin Roberts. She wore yellow, as we could have predicted well enough by now, in the form of an Alice + Olivia babydoll minidress with a shirred mockneck and bishop sleeves. Even though the Karena design is still available for the moment, retailing at $465, we wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Gorman effect extends to Alice + Olivia’s retail site with how smitten people are by her bright … Read the rest

“What are you wearing?” It’s an exciting question you hear over and over again on the red carpet and at fashion shows. Yet it’s also the same inappropriate words that are all too familiar for survivors of sexual assault. Civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, who penned her own rights into existence after her rape as a college student, wants to reclaim that very question as both a survivor and lover of fashion.

“I realized I’d heard this question before in my life, after my rape. The exact same words, but in dramatically different contexts.”

When she first attended Fashion Week, she had a “light bulb moment,” Amanda, who’s the founder and CEO of Rise, a social movement accelerator for civil rights activists, told POPSUGAR in a recent interview. “I realized that one of the most popular questions to ask is, ‘I love your outfit, what are you wearing?’ I realized … Read the rest

Aazhia Rhy has had quite a year – unlike most of us, in a good way. The TLZ L’Femme designer not only dropped over 10 capsule collections, she’s dressed a handful of celebrities, including R&B sister duo Chloe x Halle at the BET Awards and Kylie Jenner (with her daughter Stormi!) for the cover of Vogue Czechoslovakia. After cementing her position at the forefront of fashion’s next generation, Rhy is now in full-on expansion mode for 2021. “Sometimes you don’t realize everything you do because you’re just going through the motions,” she tells POPSUGAR.

Before launching her label, Rhy was a style icon in her own right. Known for sporting daring, early aughts-inspired outfits, the designer often served her own muse, and has been expressing herself through fashion from a young age. It was Rhy’s sister, Janaé Rice, who first put fashion design on her radar after introducing her … Read the rest

Celebrity stylist Jill Jacobs has a knack for putting together some of the most captivating outfits, just look at one of her biggest clients, Kylie Jenner. (Have you seen all of the vintage pieces Kylie has been wearing lately?! That’s all thanks to Jill.) Jill started out with Revolve in 2008 and brought her styling, merchandising, branding, and creative direction skills into the celebrity styling and personal shopping world shortly after. Her roster includes heavyweights like Kylie Jenner, Sofia Richie, Jasmine Sanders, and Desi Perkins, to name a few. We chatted with Jill to learn more about her styling process and how she’s been creating look one amazing after another, especially during the pandemic.
