Kim Kardashian accepted the 2021 People’s Choice Award for fashion icon of the year from 2020’s recipient, Tracee Ellis Ross. “From one Balenciaga-lover to another,” Ross began as she introduced Kim, who strutted down the stage to give her speech in an all-black, body-conscious, jacquard corseted Balenciaga outfit reminiscent of the infamous incognito sheath she wore to perfectly coincide with the 2021 Met Gala theme. For this event, however, Kim selected geometric sunglasses that covered half her face, making a major statement before she even reached the microphone (as she is known to do).
“I started off as a closet organizer and a stylist, so the fact that I’m winning a fashion icon award is like a pinch-me moment,” Kim said, taking the time to thank designers Riccardo Tisci, who created her Givenchy wedding dress; Olivier Rousteing of Balmain; and Zac Posen, who took her to her first CFDA Fashion Awards. “Thank you to Kanye [West], even, for introducing me to the fashion world,” Kim said, finishing on a humble note: “It’s a dream that I get to wake up and wear these amazing clothes, try new things, take a risk.” Scroll to see what Kim wore for the occasion she’ll surely never forget.
