Have you ever wondered how important it is to establish your skin type? Bearing this fact in mind, we find it useful to follow Pio Sirimu and Ngugi Wa Thiong”s seminal example in using the term “orature” to denote poems, plays, stories, etc., in oral form, and in reserving the term “literature” for the same things in their written forms. Because “obloquy” has been routinely heaped upon African orature by Eurocentric critics critics of African literature, we have, in discussing African literature, found it necessary to examine at some length the qualities of African orature. furthermore, African orature is important to this enterprise of decolonizing African literature, for the important reason that it is the incontestable reservoir of the values, sensibilities, aesthetics, and achievements of traditional African thought and imagination outside the plastic arts. We are presently engaged and engrossed in imbibing, aping and executing in both speech and action all that is European or American, that we really do not have time to look into our history, culture, traditions and so forth to begin to talk about nation-building, once we understood what we need to know, study and live from our own and selves and culture. It is either we do as we have been made up to be thus far-that we need to begin to recognize, study and concretely know our cultures, traditions, customs, music, dances, traditional dresses and so forth before we can even countenance the unknown and unclear freedom and autonomy that so many tout, and yet that is still has not been realized nor achieved by the majority of Africans in Mzantsi-to date. 1935 The Transvaal Inter-Race Soccer Board is formed by Africans, Indians, and Suzman Cup, the first official inter-racial tournament between Africans, Coloureds, and Indians, is established. (17) The Haitian revolution requested of him that wherever he was successful in liberating a country, he should abolish slavery. Simon Bolivar never went back on his promise. Within the Pan-African context, as James makes clear in his book, A History of Pan-African Revolt , the revolution of Toussaint Louverture was an inspirer, of the slave revolts in the 1840’s of the American South led by Nat Turner and Denmark Vesey, of the Kimbangu movement in the Congo of 1921, of Clement Kadalie’s Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union of South Africa in the early 1920’s, and of the Mau Mau national uprising in the colonial Kenya of the 1950’s. In fact, Black people seeking a scientific approach to the problems afflicting and facing African people, and Africans must begin acting and being Historians, scientists, observing their situation, recording their own data and following up with their own analysis of the their observations, experience and data. Their own analysis will then inform them of what it is that they, as Africans people, need to do to achieve their goal objectives.
The issue of classism in Rushdie’s story brings to light the immigrant’s need to connect to their homeland regardless of where they are geographically. Unlike the nicknaming and the acceptance of pop culture for the sake of fitting in, the need to connect to the old country†reflects a desire to be accepted as who one is. The immigrant doesn’t want to lose touch with who they are and where they come from. In Indian culture, Mary would be considered the help†or a servant. This denotes a lower caste. Instead of sleeping with the family, she sleeps on a mat outside in the hallway. However, she is highly regarded as part of the family in that she is seen affectionately as a grandmotherly†figure or ayah. In this respect, the family holds on to some of the cultural morays of their homeland. The father also displays some personal dissatisfaction with his life in London. According to Rushdie, his father (Abba), initially, was always in a bad disposition, drank heavily and isolated himself from his family. (I’m not sure if the father having his own flat is a result of the sexist and classist Indian culture, but the fact that he made decisions without his wife’s consult is a clear indication of chauvinism.) Rushdie’s sort-of-cousin,†Chandni, also reflects the pull between the need to identify as Indian, all the while surrendering to the wiles of the dominant pop culture. She was training to be an Indian classical dancer, Odissi as well as Natyam, but in the meantime she dressed in tight black jeans and a clinging black polo neck jumper and took me, now and then, to hang out at Bunjie’s, where she knew most of the folk-music crowd that frequented the place, and where she answered to the name of Moonlight, which is what chandni means. (Rushdie 187)†The old family friend that Rushdie beat in chess, in some ways, reflects the awkwardness of Indian immigrants in a land and culture that are not their own. The fact that this man was an old India hand†denotes that he may have served in the military there under British rule. The nicknames that Rushdie gave him (Suffolk of Field Marshal Sir Charles Lutwidge-Dodgson and The Dodoâ€) carry various meanings. Field Marshal denotes military rank. Sir Charles Lutwidge-Dodgson was the writer of Alice in Wonderland in which The Dodo was a character. The Dodo could mean prince†or an awkward bird. Either way, this was one of Rushdie’s many disrespectful nicknames for the adults around him that was a clear reflection of their character. The Dodo, according to Rushdie, appeared to be awkward in his British surroundings. Rushdie described the man’s situation as hell†because he didn’t fit†in his own surroundings.

(29) The political context of the writing of this book, which Jones himself does not mention, was in indirect to refute the absurd claims of Mussolini that Ethiopia was part of Italian soil. What A.H.M. Jones achieved here, was to integrally situate Ethiopia at the center of African history and to trace the longevity of its dynasticism. In other words, Jones had drawn the elementary forms of African history of a particular country a full three decades before Trevor-Roper made his asinine remarks. In relation to the populations being discussed above, the expression “traditional values” refers to a composite set of principles, and to an extent knowledge and beliefs are held in high esteem embedded in african societies, and that are deemed worthy of being regarded as the guidelines for African behavior and interpersonal, group and inter-group communications and relationships. African societies share certain fundamental values that guide the day-to-day life of inhabitants in traditional “African Settings”. The values of interest here are mainly those that guide the various processes of commuication. South Africa is different, because the separation was dictated and is deeply ingrained in the unconscious. It is a fragmented society where integration feels ‘unnatural’ and the option to leave the familiar social context is rather new and takes place predominantly in the city. Your first task will be to clean your skin, especially your face, a couple of times each day. If you find it more agreeable discard the facecloth and use your bare hands. It’s just like our languages and music. This is where One of my battles with anyone who thinks like that and says such statements that I have been dealing with head on and energetically opposed, throughout this Hub. Culture and personality are not like old clothes that can an be taken off and thrown away. The ability of anyone to learn even the simplest thing is dependent upon utilizing the existing cultural apparatus. “New” Cultures emerge out of older cultures gradually and never completely lose all traces of the old and the past. Human society is a cumulative process process in which the past is never totally obliterated. bdegiulio; Thank you very much Bill. The whole northeast of Thailand is not a region which generally attracts foreign tourists in the way that Bangkok, the islands and beaches to the south, or the hill tribe culture of the northwest does, but it’s a very laid back, rural part of the country, with customs, a cuisine and dialect unique to the area. Many people from this relatively poor part of Thailand, have in the past migrated to the city of Bangkok to seek a better living, but understandably still have a nostagic affinity for the region, and that must have helped drive the initial tourist interest in Chiang Khan.
